US authorities have imposed visa restrictions on former European Union Internal Market and Digital Services Commissioner Thierry Breton. US Deputy Secretary of State Sarah Rogers announced this on the social network X. She recalled that Breton is one of the main developers of European law on digital services. It was on this basis that in August 2024, a European official published a letter threatening the owner of social network X, Elon Musk, who was going to conduct an online interview with the then US presidential candidate Donald Trump. In addition to Breton, sanctions are also being imposed on British political consultant Imran Ahmed, the heads of German-based NGOs Anna-Lena von Hodenberg and Josephine Ballon, and the head of British NGO Claire Melford. They have all been accused of trying to censor American companies and public opinion leaders. On September 12, it was reported that US authorities threatened foreigners with possible visa restrictions for disrespectful posts on social networks about the assassination of American political activist Charlie Kirk.
