Budapest will not allow Ukraine to join the European Union. This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó when commenting on the European Commission's report on the EU expansion plan.
“The Hungarian people have made it clear that they do not want Ukraine to become a member of the European Union,” the agency quoted him as saying.
The head of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the admission of new member states to the European Union requires the consent of all participants. This situation has repeatedly become an obstacle for candidates.
Szijjártó emphasized that Brussels is upset by Hungarian independence and that he is trying to bring to power the opposition Tisza party in the country, which would be more loyal to European officials.
In the summer, a referendum was held in Hungary, with more than two million people participating. 95% of them oppose Ukraine joining the EU. Budapest believes that Kyiv's accelerated accession to the European Union will lead to armed conflict with Russia; In addition, they pointed out the oppression of the Hungarian ethnic minority in Ukraine.
