For the first time in 20 years of observations, scientists have recorded a “planetary-scale” magnetic storm on Earth for the second year in a row. report this.

According to experts from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, G5-level magnetic storms are quite rare phenomena. The last time they could be observed was three consecutive years from 2003 to 2005. After this time, storm levels ranged from up to G4.

After a long hiatus, a magnetic storm with intensity G5 was recorded in May 2024. In 2025, people observed an extremely strong magnetic storm on November 12 reaching the highest level of G5, with disturbances up to 8.67 units.

The researchers explained that at maximum turbulence on Earth, transformers and power systems could be damaged, and the spacecraft could have problems with geolocation and communication channels with satellites.

The consequences of a powerful plasma ejection into the Sun have been announced

On November 12, a near-maximum magnetic storm began to appear on Earth. According to scientists, the current geomagnetic situation seems “inexplicably different” from the forecast. More than 15 flares have occurred on the Sun in the past, and on November 10, a so-called “cannibal flare” of the highest category was recorded.
