Nvidia is considering increasing production of the H200 artificial intelligence (AI) chip. This is due to high demand from customers in China, where requests have exceeded current production volumes. Previously, the US government allowed the export of these processors to China on condition of paying a 25% fee.
Major Chinese companies including Alibaba and ByteDance have expressed interest in purchasing the H200. However, the final decision on whether these chips will be allowed on the market has not yet been made by Chinese authorities, who are holding emergency meetings. In particular, the possibility of conditions is being discussed, such as the mandatory purchase of a certain number of local chips with each H200.
The H200 chip is about six times more powerful than the H20 version weakened especially for China. Nvidia is currently focusing on releasing the newer Blackwell and Rubin lines, so H200 production is limited.
