According to mathematical modeling carried out by scientists from Tomsk State University and their partners from the Institute of Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Jupiter's gravitational field is capable of redirecting many asteroids towards Earth. Izvestia writes about this. The research involved analyzing the orbits of celestial bodies approaching our planet, while also finding them close to the gas giant's orbit.
Experts have come to the conclusion that some of these space objects pose a potential threat to Earth.
Earth is threatened by “invisible” asteroids
Calculations show that over the next century, 854 asteroids are expected to approach Jupiter. Of these, 342 objects are also predicted to be closer than 0.01 astronomical units (about 1.5 million km) from our planet.
