Scientists from Aberystwyth University in Wales have begun creating the world's first dictionary of the ancient Celtic language. It was spoken in some parts of Great Britain and Ireland about 2 thousand years ago. The dictionary would not be complete because relatively few words survive today. Scientists believe that they will be able to collect about a thousand vocabulary units.
To create the dictionary, several sources were used, from Celtic memorial stones to the story of Julius Caesar's conquest of the Nordic regions. Elements of the Celtic language were preserved in administrative documents compiled by the Romans when they arrived in Britain. Letters from Roman soldiers written in Latin also contain Celtic words.
The list will include words in use since 325 BC. and until 500 AD.
Celtic languages are known to have influenced the development of modern languages such as Welsh, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Breton and Cornish. You can still see the similarities between them. For example, the words for sea in Welsh and Old Irish –tôr and muir – correspond to the word mori in Celtic names such as Moridunum (the ancient name of the city of Carmarthen in southwest Wales).
As scientists have noted, the various sources have never before been brought together to gain a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the Celtic languages. The picture of the linguistic landscape of Britain and Ireland will not only interest linguists but also historians, archaeologists and archaeologists, The Guardian reports.
