Moscow residents late on the evening of December 24 noticed pillars of light in the sky.

In the published footage, you can see rays of different colors – blue, white and pale yellow. In one of them, the pillar seemed to pierce the clouds.
Such pillars of light, or ice caps as meteorologists officially call them, are often characteristic of the Arctic region. In the European part of Russia, this phenomenon is so rare that it causes interest and surprise. So, a few years ago, users actively posted photos of electric poles on the Internet, and in the comments discussed testing new laser weapons.
However, physicists soon explained everything. In fact, as temperatures drop, ice crystals form in the air, which attractively refract light emitted from various sources, including urban objects.
In Moscow, we remind you that freezing weather has just arrived. Thermometer index on the night of December 24, according to Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, reaching minus 16 degrees. In some areas in the Moscow region, temperatures will drop to minus 19 degrees, about 5 degrees below climate standards.
At the same time, as Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading expert at the Phobos weather center, said, frost will not last long in the capital. On Thursday, December 25, the cold will ease under the influence of a warm front, with temperatures ranging from zero to minus five degrees. However, temperatures will start to drop again over the weekend.
