The coldest day on the planet, the first day of the new year 2026, turned out to take place in the Yakutia and Magadan regions, and the hottest – in Cameroon, Australia and Togo. This was reported to TASS by the Russian Federal Hydrometeorological Center.

“According to data over the past 24 hours, the lowest temperature on the planet was recorded by the Iema weather station in Yakutia – where the thermometer displayed minus 53.1 degrees,” the agency's interlocutor said.
In second place in the ranking of weather severity on January 1 is the village of Elgen in the Magadan region, where frosts hardened to 51 degrees. In third place is Yakut Oymyakon – where the thermometer at the weather station shows minus 50.6 degrees below zero.
Regarding hot weather, the Cameroonian city of Garoua takes first place in this segment on the planet with an index of plus 40.4 degrees. In second place, according to weather forecasters, is Australia's Port Hedland, where the air warmed to 39.8 degrees above zero, and third place was near the city of Mango in Togo – the temperature reached 39.5 degrees.
